Sponge cities

A ‘’Sponge city’’ is a type of city which uses a variety of techniques to deal with excess rainwater. It acts like a sponge and absorbs it. Then the rainwater is transferred into the city’s system of retention e.g. underground retention tanks. Retained water can then be used to clean the streets, water lawns and parks or even flush toilets in administrative buildings. In recent years due to climate change many urban areas have experienced heavy rainfall. Existing stormwater systems are inefficient and cannot cope with such amounts of rain. As a result more and more often we are witnessing flooding, which results in heavy damage to city and private property. Progressing climate change means that we need to prepare for negative weather events in the future. Sponge cities are part of the solution for this. Designers are becoming more aware of the situation and are coming up with new and improved solutions.

Shipping container house

The amount of excess shipping containers in the world has become a huge issue. Some of the used containers were only used once because it’s cheaper to produce new containers than to import them back to the producer. Architects decided to use them as a part of building constructions. This solution is not only sustainable and can help decrease the carbon footprint. It is also much cheaper than a standard building construction. Containers can be either brand-new - usually imported from China - or used and sold by local sellers. Although used shipping containers are more eco-friendly it’s important to check their condition and certification. Some of them can be damaged, some have been used to transport different dangerous chemicals or have other defects that make them unusable for house construction. Iran protests

The protests started after the death of Mahsa Amini and now the have spread across the country. Mahsa Amini was arrested while visiting Teheran because of the way she had veiled her hair. Although the police announced she died of natural causes she was most likely tortured and killed by police officers who arrested her. A report from the Theranian hospital says that ‘’she has suffered a concussion from a blow to her head’’ and that was already dead when she arrived at the hospital. Protests have been spreading online despite attempts by the authorities to stop Iranians from using social media to learn about the incident. The protests have been held in Mahsa Amini’s home town Saqqez, Teheran and many more cities all over the country. There have been already over 41 deaths among protestors, at least 4 of the dead were children.
